What Is an Occlusal Splint? An occlusal splint, sometimes called a night guard or bite splint, is a custom-made dental appliance generally worn at night. It creates a protective barrier between upper and lower teeth and can help reduce direct grinding effects on teeth and restorations. TMJ and Jaw PainTemporomandibular disorders can involve jaw joints and surrounding muscles. Symptoms may include jaw or facial pain, tenderness, chewing discomfort, limited movement, clicking or joint sounds, headaches and a tired or tight jaw. Jaw pain has different causes. An occlusal splint may be useful for selected patients, particularly where clenching or grinding contributes to symptoms, but it is not a universal treatment for every type of TMJ or facial pain. If symptoms require further investigation or management, referral to an appropriate healthcare practitioner or specialist may be recommended. | Frequently Asked Questions
